Converting files from one Endnote version to another
If you're using 2 (or more) different computers or sharing Endnote files/libraries with other people, you might encounter some problems while trying to open them on a certain computer. This is usually due to the different Endnote versions that might be installed on different computers.
How can you solve it?
Answer
If you're working with different Endnote versions, you might need to convert your Endnote files/libraries in order for them to open correctly.
Converting a file from an older Endnote version to a newer one usually occurs automatically when trying to open it. If, for some reason, this is not happening, try to open the file from the "File" menu:
File > Open > Open Library > select the old EndNote library file you wish to convert.
(EndNote X9.3 or later will create a new library and leave the original library unchanged).
Converting a file from a newer Endnote version to an older one requires the following procedure:
[1] Open your Endnote library in the newer version. Make sure all references are displayed.
[2] Click on the file menu and select "Export".
[3] Pick a name and location for the XML file, set the File Type to (.xml) click "Save".
[4] Go to the older version of EndNote. Click on File > Import > File (on Windows) or File > Import (On Mac).
[5] In the Import dialog, click “Choose” or “Browse” and select the export file.
[6] Select "EndNote Generated XML" as the “Import Option”.
[7] Change the “Duplicates:” option to your requirement.
[8] Set the “Text Translation” to "No Translation".
[9] Click on “Import”.
