What is a pre-print version of an article?

Answer

While there is no definitive definition of a pre-print (sometimes written without the hyphen, preprint), the most common usage is to describe the version of the article that was submitted to the publisher before being accepted or peer reviewed.  It can, however, refer to the accepted version, so it is better to use a more specific term.  (other terms:  Submitted manuscript, Author original, Author's version, Submitted version)

To ensure that this is the definition used by your publisher, check the license terms on the publisher web site.
